This Week's Question is :If you are a fan of Science Fiction what is your favorite book? If you haven't read Science Fiction before...any inkling to? Anything catch your eye?

I love Science Fiction movies but not so much in books, but one has caught my attention and that Across The Universe by Beth Revis.

Question of the Week: No Question this week

Topic Thursday- Sneak A Peek or Skimming?

BannerFans.com

The topic for this week came about because when I started the book I am reading now then skipped to the ending, I thought to myself, I wonder if I am the only one that does this.

Am I the only one? I mean I try not too but it like tugs at me, pleads with me like a tempting piece of chocolate and I cave. Does this stop me ever from reading all the way through? No and I honestly can't say why I do it either, maybe curiosity? I want to know if you have ever done it and if you have does it stop you from continuing with the book?

How about skimming through a book? I don't do this as much as I peek at the ending but I have been known to. Why you ask, well most of the time its because I hit either a slow spot or I just want to get to the juicy parts. Has skimming effected your connection with the characters or the book? At least not for me it hasn't. What about you?

Will I stop sneaking a peek? Probably not my curiosity always gets the better of me? So tell me do you?

Kelly's Review: THE GLASS CASTLE

THE GLASS CASTLE
By Jeannette Walls
Published by: Scribner, 1230 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10020
First Printing: 2005
ISBN-13: 978-0-7432-4753-5
ISBN-10: 0-7432-4753-1
Concept: “The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching then physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family.
The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.”
Review: This story follows the upbringing of Jeannette Walls from Arizona to California, Nevada, Texas, West Virginia and New York. Truly, if everything happened as this book details its an incredible story. Sometimes you find yourself shaking your head at the amazing things that these kids go through and the even more incredulous parents. I remember seeing Ms. Walls on The Today Show many years ago after this book first came out and she struck me as being honest and just wanting to tell the story. I’ve wanted to read the book since then. I read Half Broke Horses, which is the story of the author’s grandmother. The grandmother was a super pioneer type woman and she withstood things that I can’t begin to imagine. In this story, her grandchildren go through their own trials and hell and come out on the other end as people that you can’t help but admire.
If you are ever feeling whiney and sorry for yourself because you can’t buy an iPad or a car like your neighbor has, read this book. It really makes you extremely thankful for what you have.
What I liked: Ms. Walls’ writing style is very quick and in your face. There’s no nice flowery type verbage, it’s plain and simple and lets you come the conclusions the author leads you to. It’s a quick read. If it carried on much more, I don’t know if anyone would be able to take it.
What I disliked: Truly the only thing I found myself critiquing about the book was that I wanted to see more photos as in the author’s grandmother’s book. I’m assuming though, given the circumstances surrounding the children, there isn’t photographs to be had.
My rating: 4 Solid Stars

Kelly's WOW This Week:

I'm ready to buy an e-reader. I'm coming into a tad bit o' moola here soon and I'm going to take a small chunk and take the plunge. The first set of books I'm going to buy for my e-reader is from an author that I really enjoy, Kim Harrison, specifically, the Rachel Morgan (The Hollows) series. I have one book that I've read and book 2 sitting on my shelf, but next week, also on the 22nd, Book 9 in the series comes out, Pale Demon. I'll be buying lots of Kim Harrison books. It's a good, fun read.

From Booklist:

"The ninth Rachel Morgan novel finds our tough and feisty witch on a mission to get her shunning rescinded, which requires traveling to the annual witch convention in San Francisco. But the coven doesn’t want her to make her appointment, so they’ve put her on the no fly list, which is why she has to accept Trent’s offer of a cross-country car trip. The rich elf has his own reasons for traveling cross-country, telling Rachel and Ivy that he is on a traditional elf quest. Fans of the series will recognize that simply having Trent, Jenks, Ivy, and Rachel on a road trip is enough to make for a good story, but that is merely the beginning of an action-packed tale that finds Rachel coming fully into her demon magic powers and reevaluating her long-held impressions of Trent. Ending with hints of some major character developments and changes in Rachel’s life, this is an excellent entry that is guaranteed to satisfy Harrison’s legion of followers. (Should there be any overlap between Clint Eastwood and Kim Harrison fan clubs, that subset will certainly enjoy Harrison’s allusions here to Eastwood’s Pale Rider.) The Rachel Morgan series is fast becoming one of the hottest tickets in the urban-fantasy subgenre. --Jessica Moyer "

Teaser Tuesday # 9

Photobucket

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
Grab your current read
Open to a random page
Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Just going to have one Teaser today because I haven't finished my book yet and two I just can't find anything as good as Kelly's this week. I literally spit my soda on my keyboard its that funny at least I thought it was. Promise next week there will be two again.

Here we go Kelly's Teaser

My teaser is my most favorite to date. Are you ready for it? Are you sure? Okay then...

"Okay, I'll drop the subject. But if you ever do that to me again, I'll stab you in the penis which I'm sure will hurt."

And, I just lost my page number. ARGH!!! But, its Shahara in Born of Fire by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Book 2 in The League series.

I know, I know. You're welcome. I thought it was good too.

PS - My husband was awesome on the Valentine's Day thing. He got me several screened nice 3/4 sleeve t-shirts that I wanted, a new bra (which I needed) and yes, a B&N GC. It's not a big one, but with everything else he got me, I think he did pretty darned good. Maybe that's why I've been married 31 years. :)

Happy Valentine's Day !

Photobucket

Valentine Smile

On Valentine's Day we think of those
Who make our lives worthwhile,
Those gracious, friendly people who
We think of with a smile.
I am fortunate to know you,
That's why I want to say,
To a rare and special person:
Happy Valentine's Day!

Valentine Treasures

Valentine treasures are people who
have often crossed your mind,
family, friends and others, too,
who in your life have shined
the warmth of love or a spark of light
that makes you remember them;
no matter how long since you’ve actually met,
each one is a luminous gem,
who gleams and glows in your memory,
bringing special pleasures,
and that’s why this Valentine comes to you:
You’re one of those sparkling treasures!

By Joanna Fuchs

My Valentine Friend

Valentine’s Day reminds me
how meaningful my feelings are for you.
You have a special place in my world
that no one else could fill.
Out of your overflowing heart,
you add color and light to my life.
You continually cross my mind,
like a precious dose of sunshine,
lighting me up inside--
as I think of you
and the lasting memories
we have created together.
No Valentine gift
is as precious to me
as you are,
my Valentine friend.
