Goodread's Summary:
It was a flash in the moonlight, a blur of motion like I’d never witnessed before. No human had the capacity to move like that. When I found myself face-to-face with him there in the meadow, I knew without a doubt that the journal was authentic. I knew that my grandfather hadn’t been crazy at all. Because a foot away from me stood a vampire. Sarah reads her grandfather's journal in stunned disbelief. What was once her grandfather's responsibility has passed to her father and now to her. She has become the Warden. Her life will never be the same.

Review:
I was surprised just how fast of a read this book was, I devoured this book in just a couple hours. Sarah finds out her life wasn't what it seemed, when her dad leaves her the family inn to run when he passed away but finds out the family secret as well.

Can you imagine finding out that supernaturals do exist? Not sure how I would feel, probably the same way as Sarah did. I thought my favorite was Alex but I think I'm a Michael fan. Thanks S.J. for the twists and turns in this book.

The world-building isn't much in this book but you still can understand exactly how her family became Vampire Wardens(can you imagine inheriting that job?). Overall this book is nice introduction into this series. So if you haven't read this book, you should. I am diving into the Vampire's Curse asap to find out what happens next with Sarah.

PREAMBLE

Back in late June, this delightful author contacted me and asked if I would read and review a book she had recently released called "Monster Story." She went on to tell me that she was sending me two other stories as well, "The Tribe" and "Half Inch." She said that if I was interested in reading them and offering a review on them she would be delighted. I told her I would do it and as luck would have it, I had some time to review them and fairly quickly. ::pausing for effect:: Pay attention to that fairly quickly part.

It is now mid August and while I have had the books read and the reviews written, I am just now getting around to posting the reviews. My life just exploded and I am slowly but surely getting ahold of things again. I would not want these stories to slide under any radar because they are good stories and YOU, our loyal blog readers, will want to know about these books and participate in this giveaway. You will. You won't be sorry.

THE GIVEAWAY

So here's the deal...leave a comment, any ol' comment. You can pat my head and tell me that it's okay, everyone's lives explode at one time or another and make me feel a little better, or you can line up and throw dart at my picture. Whichever. But LEAVE a comment! Because that will enter you in a drawing (determined by Random.org) to win an e-copy of one of the stories of your choice directly from the author (who is still lovely enough to want to do this). The drawing will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd and the winner announced that day as well. Make sure you leave your e-mail address or it will go into another round of Random.org if you don't!

Post away my darlings!!! I'll see you next week when I'll be picking up some meme's again. Good luck! Whomever wins will be one lucky enchilada!!!

THE REVIEWS

THE TRIBE
By McCarty Griffin
Published by: McCarty Griffin (Smashwords)
First Printing: 2010
ASIN: B004ZZQUZU
Amazon; Barnes and Noble; Goodreads

Concept: “The tribe has been alone on the farm for many seasons, struggling to survive by their wits and will, unaided by the humans who abandoned them there years ago. Few members of the tribe outside of Tia, the eldest, and her fiercely loyal companion Bella, remember a time when two-legs--the cats' name for humans--lived in the farmhouse. Suddenly, the tribe's territory is invaded by a young two-legs couple, and the frightened cats ask themselves why have two-legs come to live there after so many seasons and what will happen to the tribe at the hands of these often cruel creatures?” (From Author’s website.)

Review: This book really landed in the right lap. As you loyal followers know, I am a huge animal person. About the only animal I’m not really all that into are cats. This book is mainly about kitties. The message in the book though, is for every responsible pet owner. It’s aimed at the young adult demographic but I found it to be a rather enjoyable read at my ripe old age. This book is wonderfully written and the characters (the animals) really jump off the page at you. It’s a delightful and responsible book and perfect timing for the problems we face today.

What I liked: I love the message of this book and I find it very interesting that the author chose to tell it while focusing on our kids since they will be the ones to fix problems like this. It’s a good story and well thought out. Heartwarming.

What I disliked: This genre isn't really my personal cup of tea and I feel uncomfortable writing this review because of that. If you are interested in this book and looking to my review to decide your purchase, please read other reviewers of this story along with mine.

HALF INCH

By McCarty Griffin

Published by: McCarty Griffin (Smashwords)

First Printing: April 27, 2010

ASIN: B004YDM212

Amazon; Barnes and Noble; Goodreads

Concept: “Pammy has had enough of Bobby, her abusive drunk of a husband. One lovely spring day, she decides to kill him, despite the fact that they will soon be divorced and he will, at least in the eyes of the law, be out of her life for good. Indulging in homicidal daydreams for years has led her to devise her own perfect and completely bizarre plan.”

Review: This is a short story of a woman who is at the end of her rope because of her abusive, alcoholic husband. But she has a plan and she’s going to off him and bury him, truck and all in a hole that she has dug. She has this plan figured out down to the “T.” The problem? Murphy’s Law strikes and it doesn’t quite go as she wanted so she has to quickly start relying on Plan B, and maybe even Plan C. It’s an interesting, nail biting, well written story but, I’m not quite sure of one thing. Why? There’s no moral to the story or bad ending or good ending. It just ends and it left me wondering if I was missing the purpose to this book.

What I liked: Once the “murder” was happening, things moved quickly and with a great deal of excitement. There was a good amount of build up and intrigue. Lots of holding your breath type moments.

What I disliked: I think this is one of those books where the story is good, but highly improbable and as I said, I am still wondering what the purpose of the story even was.

My rating: 3.5 feathers

MONSTER STORY
By McCarty Griffen
Published by: McCarty Griffin
First Printing: April 27, 2011
ASIN-B004YDR3F4
Amazon; Barnes and Noble; Goodreads

Concept: “Christy McCauley has returned to West Virginia at last, but her homecoming quickly turns into a surreal nightmare. In the deep hollows and woods of rural Augusta County, something unspeakable is slaughtering people in the dark of night. Authorities don't know if its human or animal, or how to stop it. Christy and her friends only know they must hunt it and destroy it, before it kills again.” [From Amazon.]

Review: I read a fellow reviewer’s review on this book just to weigh our opinions against one another, and then I read another and another and then with my opinion, I think I can safely report that everyone agrees that this book should be considered a “cozy” horror story that has a sort of backwoods redneck horror atmosphere. You know the scene, someone is dead, a bunch of characters go “hunting” in the scary, dark woods. Some live, some die, some meet the monster that goes bump in the night. That’s how this story reads. It’s a good, familiar type read while introducing us to some fun characters, some that make it, some that don’t and a truly crazy monster (that’s crazy in a spooky, don’t turn the lights off sort of way). Throughout it all though, there is a unique and likeable writing style and if you are a lover of scary movies, this book is for you.

What I disliked: I am a lover of characters in my books, but I am finding many authors that seem to be throwing in character after character for no reason. That is sort of the case here, except because some of the characters are victims, I sort of am okay with it. But I can’t help but wonder if it really would have made that big of a difference if there were less characters and still the amount of victims if it would have been so bad?

The book for me was slow in some spots. I felt there could have been better flow to the story. Now having said that, I’m going to turn around and compliment the writer on an excellent writing style that presented the story in a unique yet familiar way. Perhaps a slightly shorter tale would have been better.

What I liked: I really liked a point of view in the story that was presented from the monster’s side. Yes, it’s been done, but this was done well and I appreciated it.

This book is a classic horror story written in a unique way by an author who has proven herself to me to be special. I will speak nothing derogatory about this author and indeed, I am hopping on the fan bandwagon. Maybe I’m not sitting in the front seat, but I’m still on the wagon.

My rating: 4 Feathers

Amazon Summary:
Hoodoo and high magic are on a collision course.

She can even light a candle without the benefit of a match. But when she's hired to exorcise a demon from a young girl, she discovers the limits of her powers.

With her vampire cousin at her side and a sexy sorcerer chasing her on the rebound, Roxie sets out to send that evil entity back where to she came from.

Nothing is as it seems and Roxie's in over her head. It's not going to be enough for her to just be a paranormal investigator and old school root worker - to defeat this demon, she's going to have to be the Mojo Queen.

Review:
Witches, Ghosts, Demons and A Vampire Oh My! This book had all that and more. What I loved and found intriguing about this book was it didn't have a stereotypical hero, in fact I did not like the male character in this book at first though parts of me thought there was more to Blake than meets the eye.

Talk about a wild ride though, and I don't mean in a bad way either. But there are parts that even have me wincing. Sonja does a wonderful job with description to bring on that effect with me.Though I didn't expect the book to end the way it did, but it did answer some questions that I had been wondering through out the book.

If you're looking for romance then this book isn't for you, though it does have a hot scene or two in it but if you're looking for a book with loads of action then please give this book a try.

Bewitching Tours Mojo Queen by Sonya Clark Guest Post and Giveaway

First I would Like to thank Sonya For stopping and guest posting today, Now I'm turning BLH over to Sonya.

There are certain things readers of urban fantasy have come to expect because of their prevalence in the genre. Kick-ass, leather pants, and tramp stamps are common descriptors for urban fantasy heroines. When I started writing Mojo Queen I knew I wanted something a little different for main character Roxanne Mathis.

Roxie is a paranormal investigator. She's also a hoodoo root worker who can see auras and spectral entities. Her life isn't about beating up bad guys, it's about using natural magic to defend against supernatural problems. She's got a casual wardrobe of jeans and cargo pants, tee shirts and boots. She wears glasses, what with being near-sighted. If she had the extra money to spare she'd choose to blow it on blues records rather than a tattoo. Unlike the reluctant heroines of some stories, Roxie has no real desire for that fabled “normal life”. She feels at home in a supernatural world most would find terrifying. Here's a passage from Goofer Dust Blues, one of the Mojo short stories available on the Free Reads page of my blog.

A gust of wind disturbed my hair, giving me a little spook. It tripped that switch in the back of my brain or deep down in my gut or wherever it was, the switch that flipped when the spook was just right and shivered across the ends of my nerves. The thing is, I like the dark. I like the spook. I feel at home there, walking alongside the things that go bump in the night. Not for nothing is my best friend a vampire.

Someone brave enough, or crazy enough, to be friends with a vampire must not be afraid of anything. Roxie does get scared though, and she has a healthy respect for all those creatures and spirits that live in the dark and sometimes cause mischief and mayhem. She gets scared, but she does her job anyway. She doesn't make a big deal out of it but she believes in helping people. Most folks can't handle the supernatural world so they don't know what to do when they come face to face with it. Remembering what it was like as a kid and first dealing with her auric vision and finding herself surrounded by ghosts, Roxie wants to help people who are out of their depth in the dark. Even if it means sometimes she finds herself in over her head. She might have to bluff her way through a situation, or she might have to jump blind and hope she sticks the landing. With her knowledge of hoodoo, her magical abilities, and yes her vampire best friend, she hasn't found a thing yet she didn't have the mojo to vanquish. Who needs leather pants when you are the Mojo Queen?

Excerpt:

I sat in the chair opposite the loveseat, placing the candles on the coffee table. Glanced at him to make sure I still had his attention, which of course I did. One side of his mouth still curled up in a smirk, eyebrow quirked. I sat back, let myself sink into the comfy chair and relax as much as possible. First the candle on the left. Focusing on the wick, I visualized a tiny flame erupting from it--concentrating my will, pouring energy into my intention. I could feel myself sliding further into exhaustion as energy curled inside me, but after a long, agonizing moment the candle came to life. I let out a breath before I could stop myself, avoiding his gaze. I didn’t want him to know how much this was taking out of me, but I had a bad feeling it was obvious. I turned my attention to the other candle and though it took even longer this time, it too lit. I felt almost as bad as I had this afternoon.

Blake reached for a backpack on the floor I had not seen in the darkness. He opened it, fished something out, and tossed it to me. I didn’t so much catch it as let it fall in my lap. A chocolate candy bar.

It was my turn to quirk an eyebrow. Waving the bar at him I said, “What, is this to ward off dementors?”

The smirk became a genuine smile again briefly. “Something like that. You need to eat.”

I gave him a skeptical look.

“You know you’re using energy with that.” He gestured at the candles. “The energy needs to be replenished.”

I rolled my eyes but tore open the wrapper. The chocolate tasted, well, damn, like mainlining something illegal. Maybe he had a point. I was halfway through the bar when he spoke again, as
if there had been no pause.

“Especially since you don’t really know what you’re doing yet.” Even in the low candlelight I had no trouble seeing the wicked amusement in his dark eyes.

I managed to finish chewing without choking, tossed the remainder of the candy bar on the coffee table and sat up straighter. “Why don’t you tell me why you’re here? Or better yet, tell me where I can find your demon lover? So I can send her back to Hell.”

“Well, actually, that’s exactly why I’m here, Roxanne.” Like we were discussing insurance or something. “I want you to find my demon lover.”

Gob-smacked, all I could manage was, “Huh?”

“And I want you to send her back to Hell.”

Sonya Clark grew up an Army brat, living all across the United States as well as Japan and Germany by the time she graduated high school. Books were one of the few constants in her life.
An eclectic reader, she always had a special love for the paranormal and is a lifelong fangirl of all things that go bump in the night.

A deep love of music is another constant thread in all of her fiction. She writes at a desk equipped with High John the Conqueror root and a mojo hand. She has worshipped at the mother church of country music, traveled the back roads of the blues highway, been to the crossroads at midnight, and though she’s never cooked up a mess of polk salad, she has been to Graceland four times.

Fate should have considered the consequences before messing with Mother Nature.

Review:
I can't tell you just how much I enjoyed this book, The main female character Chase, who is a private detective, which I find interesting enough that is her career. I haven't read too many with the females as PI's but then maybe its the books I choose. I love that she is sassy, stubborn and kick's ass!.

Roman, half vampire and half lycan well now I could have the best of both worlds, definitely my kind of hero. I also loved the interesting unique take on the vampire and lycan lore. I know I have said this before but I am constantly amazed at how many different versions of the vampire myth as well as the lycan, that is being written.

This book was fun wild ride, that has you chuckling out loud, Not one part of this storyline did I find boring though towards the end I did scratch my head on one thing. Wondering how was that possible, I truly hope there is another book to follow this one, I would definitely love to read more. I am also going to be checking out Pepper's other works.

Amazon Summary:
More than three hundred years after the most terrifying witch hunts the world has ever known, it's happening again.

Racing from attack by the ruthless Brotherhood in London to the powerful witch council in New York, twenty-four-year-old novice witch Stella has to put her faith in strangers just to stay alive but she might not be any safer in their midst than from the danger she is running from.

Sent to an extraordinary safe house by the sea to learn her craft, Stella finds there is more than one dark secret in her new family: Étoile’s sister is spoken of in fear and sadness; Marc is supposed to be a powerful witch but is missing his magic; where does the owner of their safe house vanish to every day and why does Evan have the eyes of someone not quite human? There is only one secret that someone will do anything to keep quiet, but whose secret is it and will Stella have to pay the price for silence?

Book Excerpt:
The man filling the doorway was at least six foot two with broad shoulders that tapered to a neat waist and long jeaned legs. Toned arms extended from under a grey t-shirt and his hands didn’t look like strangers to work. As my eyes travelled up from his chest I noted a tanned, square jaw that hadn’t seen a razor in a day or two, a slim nose and brown eyes so dark I could barely distinguish iris from pupil. His hair was cut short and so dark it could almost have been black. He wasn’t beautiful in the traditional sense but he was captivating, the type of man people automatically turn their heads to have another look at. I couldn’t drag my eyes away and my heart did a little flip.

A fleeting image of being wrapped up in his arms, his lips crushing mine, echoed through my mind. He caught my eye and held my gaze. I was glad he couldn’t see inside my mind, but I blushed furiously. His face looked thunderous. And now, come to think of it, Marc didn’t exactly look happy either.

“This is her?” he asked no one in particular, his eyes still fixed on me, his expression fading from thunder to completely impassive.

“Stella,” I spluttered, my cheeks still red as the image in my head seemed to topple over and feature us sprawling, limbs entwined. Was I supposed to shake his hand now? Good God. “Hi.”

Étoile looked from me to Evan and coughed lightly, her hand
covering a smile and I had just time to wonder what she had seen before she said, “Evan will be teaching you.”

“I will not,’ said Evan, his mouth set in a firm line. “She leaks. Find someone else.”

“David could teach her,” snapped Marc, scowling at Evan, the muscles in his arm had tensed though he was still sitting and I could see the veins bulge. What was with him?

“David is teaching Christy, Clara and Jared,” said Aunt Meg placidly. “Evan will be teaching her. That’s why he’s here.”

If silence could have deafened us, it would have. Marc scowled at Evan, Evan looked thunderously at me and I gripped my glass as if it was a life rope in a storm. Étoile finished up her second scone and looked around gleefully as if we were the height of entertainment. Meanwhile, my mind was getting increasingly lurid and I could hardly look Evan in the eye for fear that he would know that I’d just had a very exciting mental picture of us doing something that really should not have popped into my head while I was having a civilised scone with company.

“If you don’t want to teach me, fine,” I gasped, daring to look at Evan from under

my lashes. Marc had leant back in his seat, arms crossed; Meg and Étoile were still looking at the man expectantly. Étoile coughed, but not before I had her snicker again.

His jaw shifted and he breathed out. “I’ll teach you,” he said at last, making it sound like the least pleasant chore he could be landed with.

“Okay.”

“Fine.” Evan stepped back out of the doorway and stalked back the way he came.

“Whew!” said Étoile. “That was weird. Like he was ever not going to teach you.”

“He’s an ass,” muttered Marc, swallowing the last of his iced tea and banging the glass back down on the table. “I’m sorry you’re stuck with him.”

“Evan Hunter is a very good teacher,” Aunt Meg chided as she gathered up the plates and swatted Étoile’s hand from the cake stand with a napkin as she reached for another scone. I noticed Aunt Meg hadn’t eaten or drank anything and hoped she didn’t think I was greedy for gobbling mine as fast as I could.

“What did he mean – I leaked?” I asked, thinking that sounded, well, gross.

“Your magic,” said Étoile. “He can feel it. So can I. You aren’t containing it, so it leaks. Not your fault.”

Hi, I'm Camilla and I'm the author of Illicit Magic and Unruly Magic, the first two books in the Stella Mayweather Paranormal Series. The series starts with a lonely young woman, Stella, who has been caught up in a terrifying witch hunt and is whisked thousands of miles away to what she thinks is safety to learn her craft. The series is a blend of magic, mystery and romance with a splash of humour - and while the girls really do go all out to save themselves, there's always a hunky guy or two on hand to help them out.

I live in London, UK but I try to travel as often as I can - lately I've been to Paris, all over Denmark, Luxembourg, and several US states. In my day job I'm a journalist and editor so I write for magazines, newspapers and websites throughout the world (my favourite assignment was spending a week riding rollercoasters - if you listen carefully you can probably still hear me screaming).
