Under the Moon Re-Release Blog Tour: Chapter One(part 2) and Giveaway

Under the Moon by Natalie J. Damschroder Chapter One (part 2 of 7)

“How long did you sleep?” he asked.

She stifled a yawn. “Seven hours, six minutes.”

He shook his head. “That’s not enough.”

“Gonna have to be. It sounds like we have a full house tonight.”

“It’s busy for a Tuesday,” he acknowledged. Murmurs and laughter mixed with the jukebox music filtering in from the main room. It was still early, too.

“Bets and Katie are both sick, so they probably need us out there.” She stood and stretched, closing her eyes briefly and arching with her arms high. He didn’t answer. “Sam?” She caught him staring at the stretch of skin bared by her sweatshirt and tugged it over the waistband of her jeans. Heat seeped through her, dragging tingles in its wake. Did he notice her skin flush?

He gave himself a little shake and pulled his gaze away. “Yeah. Yeah, I guess.” But he scowled.

Quinn propped her hands on her hips. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” He sat up and shifted papers on his desk, but she knew it wasn’t “nothing.”

“Sam.”

He sighed. “We need to talk. You’ve put me off all week, and now we’ve got Nick…”

Shit. She had hoped Nick coming early would put an end to this debate. She dragged her cotton apron off the back of her chair and busied herself tying it. “I’d better get to work.”

But Sam didn’t get up. His voice was low and deep when he said, “Why didn’t you come to me?”

Her hands stilled, and she avoided his steady gaze by checking for her order pad and pen. “You know why.”

“I’m still here.” He stood and came around the desk, and she couldn’t help but look at him now. He dwarfed her, filling her vision, his scent flooding her senses, feeding the grinding need she’d battled for weeks. She kept her lids shuttered so he couldn’t see the inevitable dilation of her pupils and take the reaction the wrong way. Her moon lust knew what Sam could give her, her body giving a Pavlovian response to his nearness.

Tapping her power source had a price. As energy flowed through her, it depleted her resources like exercise depleted an athlete. Instead of needing water and vitamins to balance her body, Quinn needed sex. She’d never understood why, but her body had always been recharged by that primal connection to another human being. She hadn’t had that for three months now, and the longer she resisted, the more difficult it got.

So Sam’s long legs, ridged stomach, and broad chest all called to her. Quinn’s hands flexed, anticipating the silk of his shaggy hair bunched in them. Only a few minutes, a voice whispered in her head. That’s all it will take. For balance. A moment of thought, of remembering the heat between them, was enough to make her crave it again. Her mouth watered as she watched Sam’s long-fingered hand track up his chest and around the back of his neck, a move she knew was calculated.

That didn’t matter. She took a step toward him, then forced herself to stop. She’d told Sam three months ago that she wouldn’t use him anymore and had held fast to the decision no matter how willing he was. It had been six years since she’d first had sex with him, and she’d only recently understood the damage they were doing to each other. Sam didn’t believe she could stop, but she had fought the moon lust for nearly twelve weeks. Tomorrow would end this full-moon cycle; she’d have it completely under control, and it would get easier next month. It had to. Yeah, because it’s been a cakewalk so far. But she didn’t have to convince herself—she had to convince Sam.

“I’ve told you. What we’re doing isn’t fair. You’ve stopped dating, stopped even looking for—” She hesitated, uncertain how to phrase it.

“I don’t need to look for it.” His tone was hard with conviction, and Quinn closed her eyes, despairing.

“That’s my point,” she said. “I’m tying you up, and you deserve better.”

“That’s a matter of debate, and you don’t have to suffer because of it.”

Her laugh didn’t need to be forced. “Not having sex isn’t suffering.”

“For you it is.”

He’d closed the distance between them, and though Quinn knew she didn’t move, her body seemed to surge toward him in agreement. She breathed in the remains of the aftershave he’d used this morning and wavered. He smelled so good.

A shout came from the other side of the paneled door, jerking Quinn out of her trance and replacing it with guilt. She couldn’t give in. Sam cared too much. And so did she, but not in the way he wanted.

Their power gives them strength…and makes them targets. Quinn Caldwell is the epitome of a modern goddess. Her power source is the moon, her abilities restricted only by physical resources and lunar phase. She runs a consulting business and her father’s bar, serves on the board of the ancient Society for Goddess Education and Defense, and yearns for Nick Jarrett, professional goddess protector and the soul mate she can never have. But someone has developed the rare and difficult ability to drain a goddess of her powers, and Quinn is a target. With the world thinking Nick has gone rogue (whatever that means) and that Quinn is influenced by “family ties” she didn’t know she had, keeping themselves safe while working to find the enemy proves harder each day. But not as hard as denying their hearts…

FMB tours: Milk Carton People: The Journey by by Sally Franklin Christie : Guest Post

Please give a warm welcome to Sally Franklin Christie, author of Milk Carton People The Journey.

I am a plotter eleven months out of the year. In November I am a pantser. Throughout the year I wish I could bottle and sell ‘butt glue for writers.’

I’ll tell you a bit about my approach to plotting.

I have a very tattered book that I bring out at the start of my project. I don’t know if writers can buy it anywhere these days.

The Weekend Novelist by Robert J. Ray. I just had to open the cover and look inside because the cover is worn and taped and his name is obscured. It is very important to get the 1994 edition. Don’t be fooled by the newer one with the same title. I am serious as a spark in Montana about getting the 94 edition.

I have character sheets, scene sheets, lists, notebooks, white boards, posters and pens.

I need to have a really firm idea of what is happening in the novel. I have to know what drives a character to madness or bliss. I have to know at least one thing these characters would never ever consider doing.

I make a plotline on poster paper where I mark an inclining line with plot points, turning points and this includes at least six key scenes. I put this poster in the bathroom where I see it several times each day.

I keep notebooks, stray forms, files, character studies, back stories in a clutter cluster I call my ‘Big Bird Nest.’ I use my computer, I think all of my pens and paper files and notebooks make me look a bit tech phobic but I have used a computer since 1982 when I had a Commodore Vic 20. I love my computer. My printer, that is a bit of a different story.

I like to go to fakenamegenerator.com when I am stuck for a character. I eaves drop and gawk at people in parking lots. I have been known to make up back stories for badly or creatively dressed strangers with cart loads of whatever the store is selling.

I also love the invention of whiteboards.

Once my characters are done to my satisfaction I go ahead and write six key scenes. When these are done I write the ‘bridges’ between them.

Now, let me tell you about November.

I change rooms, set up the laptop, sit in my yellow chair so my feet touch the ground and tap out at least 1667 words a day.

Just before I go down for NaNoWriMo I make sure I have my Lightbox ready, loads of glutin-free snacks, coffee and a hat that says “Not Now – I’m NaNo-ing.” I also have a copy of No Plot – No Problem in the room with me. It is not quite as tattered as my other book.

The butt glue is still applied but the planner, internal editor, researcher, sometimes even the spellchecker is sent to a far away kennel and is not even allowed a phone call till I get to the end.

My first published novel, If I Should Die, was a NaNo project. My second published novel, Milk Carton People was a Plotted project.

I really don’t know if I have any quirky writing rituals but I am sure my family may disagree. I am addicted to sticky notes and ink pens. I have notebooks everywhere and if my computer begins to act out I start saving up for a new one. Did I mention the ink pens?

Thank you for having me as a guest on your site.

Thank you Sally for joining us today.

Book Description:

Milk Carton People is a paranormal thriller about people who suddenly find themselves invisible, able to observe things but unable to participate. Do they go mad? Maybe they find others. It is quite possible that there is no point in being invisible.

This is a book that plays on the very thin line of sanity and pure despair. The characters act and react to the new challenges and the reader gets to go along for the ride.

Excerpt:

I’m going to wake up, now, and go about my day with my cup of coffee. By the time I get to work, the whole thing will disappear like all dreams. I won’t even remember it.

She turned away from the little tree and took a few steps down the sidewalk. She intended to turn back toward the book store again, to somehow retake control of her destiny. As if turning back would give everyone one more chance to tell her it was all in fun and she was such a good sport.

Just then, a woman in an electric blue colored coat, walked right into her.

“Excuse, me,” Ruth began and stopped speechless. For one long, drawn out, slow motion, nightmare second, her vision was obscured by a brownish red filter which blurred everything before her. She felt hot, sticky, and confined. A cloying odor of spoiled hamburger made her gasp for clean air. She tasted copper pennies in her mouth. At the same time Ruth heard a gurgling noise and a squeak and as the whole event suddenly ended she heard a plop like pudding falling from a spoon back into the bowl.

A sudden cold sweat competed with stomach acid lurching into her throat. Ruth swallowed it back and turned to watch as the woman in electric blue continued walking down the sidewalk without breaking stride. Ruth watched the woman in the electric blue coat disappear around the corner.

“No,” Ruth said aloud with authority. “No,” she repeated louder, hoping make it all go away. “This did not happen.”

She walked to the nearest building and stood close to the cold bricks in the shadows.

I have to go home.

Mara is having the worst month of her life. At least, that's what her cards tell her and they've never been wrong. She's evicted from her apartment, loses her job and is banned from Beverly Hills. So when the tarot cards predict her imminent demise, she uses a little magic to make her world right.

Suddenly, an aunt she's never met dies, leaving Mara as her sole heir. But when Mara moves into her inherited home, she discovers Aunt Tillie never moved out. She's still one pissed-off old lady, even post-mortem, and she blames Mara's magical meddling for her death.

When Mara accidentally releases a demon and awakens the spirit of the most powerful witch in history, Tillie's ready to kill her -- literally. It's the only way she can think of to save the girl from herself. The witch and the demon, however, have other plans for Mara's body!

Review:
What can I say about this book except that it was just a plain fun book to read.  The story flowed well and the characters I just loved everyone of them , well except for a couple of them anyway.

I certainly could relate to Mara, I have had months like she has experienced and I am not even a witch.  So what is a girl to do but go with her destiny so to speak and move.  That's when things really get crazy. From ghosts to demons to evil witches, which by the way I didn't know who actually was the evil one til much later in the book and that is a good thing.

As much as I love my romances, I am finding I am enjoying books like this just as much even if it doesn't have a main male hero.  In this case especially, her 'love interest'  was kind of wimpy in my opinion, though I did like him.

Overall, this was a fast, fun read that I really hope the author writes more with these characters.  I enjoyed the characters interactions and the plot was fantastic.  I think , okay I know my new favorite supernatural is witches.  So if you love sarcastic characters mixed with action and a bit of smexy action (not much at all) including demons, witches and ghosts all tossed together in one book this one is for you.

Review: Enchanted Hearts by Belinda Boring

Part of the A Midsummer Night's Fling anthology
 YA Historical Romance with Fantasy

Blurb:

How do you choose between mere moments and a lifetime?

Aithne was raised on fairytales, spending hours daydreaming about meeting one of the elusive Fae. Little did she know, hidden in the shadows, a Fae Prince stood watching. All it took was one glance and Hadrian became enchanted, unable to stay away. Revealing his presence, Aithne's life was forever changed as her childhood fantasies of magic became a reality.

With each encounter, Aithne fell deeper in love and even though she knew Hadrian couldn't offer her the future she craved, it was enough. That was until William, the local blacksmith's son and friend, stepped forward. Wearing his own heart on his sleeve, and eager to claim Aithne as his wife, there was nothing William wouldn't do for the girl he loved. Even if it meant risking it all at the Midsummer Night's festival.

Three enchanted hearts ... two honorable men ... one important choice.

Review:

As you may have read in previous reviews I already am a big fan of Belinda Boring's work when I asked if I wanted to review her newest novella, of course I said yes. Even though I haven't read too many books regarding the Fae.  I found I enjoyed reading about the Fae very much.  Only issue I had  is that I wish we could have had more of the Fae world into this book.

This was a short but sweet love story tied around three characters, Aithne, Hadrian and William.  I have a love hate relationship with love triangles.  If they are written well then I love them and in this case it worked.  I felt for all three characters in this situation.  And who could blame Aithne for being torn between the two.  It didn't surprise me who she picked and actually I was happy with her choice. Normally I am not, which is one reason I hate love triangles. Half the time I don't agree with the choice.

Overall this was a fast nice read with a couple swoon worthy kisses that Belinda is known for. I definitely recommend this read to all you Fae YA lovers out there.

Old earth has been deemed unsuitable for life, New Earth is home. With the Uni-War over, races have joined together in order to sustain their way of life. All life was deemed worth saving, but only one race failed to submit. Humans.

Now extinct, humans are a thing of the past, or at least their way of life. The people of New Earth won’t acknowledge their hand in the human’s eradication, but they have benefited from it. Dr. Vaggo Blackmore has found the answer, he’s restored his races way of life- sustenance through farming. The one thing that will give them back their long lives….. Blood: human blood.

Biologically engineered in a lab, Genesis Blackmore has always been different. Her father has told her it’s due to her enhancements, the Federated Council sees her as a genetic mutation; and her fellow peers see her as the shiny new toy. Gen has had better days.

Everyone on New Earth has milky white skin, platinum blonde hair, and electric blue eyes. It’s the norm. Genesis’ glossy, black hair, ice blue eyes ringed by gold, would have almost made her socially acceptable- if it wasn’t for her honey, almond skin and blue, gold veins. In a sea of milky white she alone is the dark anomaly.

All Pars get their life’s nourishment through blood plasma. All Pars find their match through the tasting. Gen can do neither, forbidden by her father to do so. She can neither taste, nor be tasted. Something that’s never bothered her until now.

RABT tours: The Immortality Virus by Christine Amsden: Excerpt and Review

Photobucket

Sci Fi
Title: The Immortality Virus
Author: Christine Amsden

Date Published: 6/15/12

Synopsis:

In the mid-21st century, the human race stopped aging. Those who know why aren't talking, and the few who are brave enough to ask questions tend to disappear. To an elite few, The Change means long life and health, but to the ever-increasing masses, it means starvation, desperation, and violence.

Four centuries after The Change, Grace Harper, a blacklisted P.I., sets off on a mission to find the man responsible for it all and solicit his help to undo The Change -- if he's still alive. To complicate matters, Grace's employer is suspected of murdering his father, and when the police learn of their connection, they give her a choice -- help them find the evidence they need to convict Matthew Stanton, or die. But if they discover Grace's true mission, they won't hesitate to kill her in order to preserve their shot at immortality.

Winner of the Epic Award for Science Fiction, the Global eBook Award for Science Fiction, and a finalist in The Next Gernation Indie Book Awards.

Excerpt:
“Check him for an ID chip,” McMillan said.

Grace checked both wrists, but didn’t find the tiny metal button that acted both as tag and as a neutral interface for portables. She also did not see any sign that such a chip had been ripped out of his skin by the same people who had stolen his clothing. This man had probably been born on the streets. “Nothing.”

“Good,” McMillan said. He subvocalized an instruction to his portable. It must have opened up a com link because a moment later he said, “Send a cleanup crew to my location beacon…no ID…10-4.”

McMillan turned to Grace. “All right, let’s go.”

“W-wait! Shouldn’t we find out what happened here? Someone murdered this man.”

McMillan actually laughed, a sound that infuriated Grace. He caught a glimpse of her face and the laughter died immediately. “Just like me. I bet I said all the same things my first day. It ain’t fair, is it?”

“So you’re just going to accept it? Accept a man being murdered in the middle of a crowd of witnesses? You’re going to accept not knowing his identity and not letting his family know he’s dead?”

“The cleanup crew will take fingerprints,” McMillan said. “The census gets almost everyone’s fingerprints. If they come up with a contact, they’ll let them know.”

“And if not?” Grace asked.

“Then he’ll join the ranks of the nameless, faceless dead. C’mon, let’s go.”

Grace didn’t move.

“Look, before the day’s out we’ll handle a dozen more like this. We don’t have time to ask questions or take statements. We don’t have time to properly examine the body or the area for clues – most of which have been taken away by other unfortunates.”

It took her a moment to find her voice. When she did, her words dripped out like acid. “Would we have had time if he’d had an ID bracelet?”

“We would not have. We’d have called in the homicide team and they’d decide. Get in the car.”

This time, Grace complied, but she sat in stony silence as McMillan lifted off and began circling the area anew.

“It helps if you don’t think of them as human,” McMillan said after a while. “More than one officer has called this job pest control.”"

Review:
The premise is one reason I decided to sign up for this tour, for me it was really unique. And I am glad I did. I have read so many books where we had immortals but never where, humans just stop aging. After reading this, I'm not sure I would would want to live forever, at least not in this world.

I enjoyed everything about this book, from the characters to the storyline. This book left me guessing, what was going to happen, how was this going to end? I honestly couldn't figure out how it was going to end. I love that!

I do have to say while I loved Grace, I didn't so much with Sam. There just was something about him I didn't like and I can't say much more without giving anything away. I highly recommend this book to all Sci Fi, Dystopian lovers out there.
