Vampires for Valentine's Giveaway Hop

Vampires for Valentine's Giveaway Hop

The Vampires for Valentine's Giveaway Hop is run by paranormal romance authors Felicity Heaton, Caris Roane and H. D. Thomson! This hop celebrates the fanged heroes and heroines, the alluring creatures of the night, yes, those vampires we all love so much. All of the giveaways in this hop have a vampire theme to them, so we are truly celebrating vampires for Valentine’s Day! Thank you ladies for making this giveaway hop possible.

My love for vampires started  when I first watched the Lost Boys, anyone remember them?  I was a huge Keifer Sutherland fan (still am) but I just had to see it and from that moment on, I was hopelessly addicted to vampires.  Though I didn't start reading about them until several years later.  As much as I loved watching them I wasn't thrilled about reading about them. I know crazy huh?

It wasn't until my niece suggested I read the Dark Hunter series, well more like beg and pleaded until I caved.  That I truly became obsessed with vampires in all factions. I mean really obsessed if you would see my bookshelves ,  90 percent is vampire.  Here are some of my favorites....

That's just a few I have many more but it would take up this whole post and I am sure you would like to know what you can win here.  You can either win one (any book in these series) ebook or print from my favorites or choose one of your own with an Amazon GC or TBD.  If the book isn't available at TBD then I will happy check out other spots to order it for you.

FMB Tours: Guest Post and GIveaway:Grim by Joe Spencer

How To Avoid the Rejection Blues

Every writer, no matter how acclaimed and famous they are, became acquainted with rejection at some point of their writing and publishing process. Opinions are as varied as snowflakes or fingerprints. No two readers look at a work and feel exactly the same about everything in the reading material. That’s why a novel acceptable to one publishing house or a group of readers isn’t necessarily attractive to other houses or readers.

It’s important for every writer to cope with rejection. It’s as certain as death and taxes. How you react to rejection just might shape the face of your career. The writing process mirrors life in that it’s constantly evolving and changing. Without growing from rejection, your writing dreams may wilt and wither before you’ve got a chance to make them a reality.

1. Keep writing
Nobody likes feeling like they’re not good enough. When you get your hopes up for a manuscript and they’re dashed, it’s deflating. When this happens to me, I give myself a few hours to be angry or to pout or to be sad, and then I get back in front of the keyboard as fast as I can. You can’t ever give up on your dream, no matter how many people tell you it won’t happen. Take any feedback you get, grow from it and keep working.

2. Make friends, not enemies
You can turn each rejection into an opportunity a good portion of the time with the right attitude. Many editors or publishers will give you some advice if you ask them. Obviously, don’t press anyone who lets you know in advance that they’re too busy to offer constructive criticism. The professionals who rejected you today could very well publish you tomorrow.

3. Review Guidelines
You could be making only a minor mistake which is causing your work to be disregarded. Make sure the agents and publishers to whom you’re sending your manuscript are seeking work in your genre and style. Also, go to their Website submission pages to ensure that you’re formatting your manuscript the way they require. If you’re sending work to the wrong agents or in the wrong format, it may be thrown in the slush pile without being read.

4. DIY
A number of authors are finding success with small independent presses or by self publishing. If you’ve got a good book and market it well, you can cultivate a following of readers on your own. If you sell self-published copies well, agents and publishers will take notice in the future.

5. Adjust your expectations
Make sure you enter the business side of writing with realistic expectations. Sure, everyone wants to hit a home run out of the gate, get on the bestsellers list and become the next iconic writer. Realistically, it takes time to get there if you get there at all. Keep in mind that getting an agent is extremely difficult, cultivating a following of readers is more difficult and gaining the trust of a publishing house in a radically changing publishing environment is even more difficult. When times are tough, businesses want to bet on a sure thing like James Patterson or Stephen King – that makes it harder for new writers to break through.

Joe Spencer is the author of Grim, a paranormal crime thriller released by Damnation Books in September 2012. It’s the first in the planned Sons of Darkness series. His second book, Wrage, is due out in 2013. He can be reached at www.josephbspencer.com.

Title: Grim
Series: Sons of Darkness Series, Book 1
Author: Joseph Spencer
Genre: Crime, Dark, Horror, Mystery, Paranormal, Thriller,
Publisher: Damnation Books
Paperback/Ebook Words: 93,000

Book Description:

When everything is taken from him, Detective Adam White must choose what's most important. Does he stick to the heroic ideals which made him a famed paragon of justice and take down a murderous madman? Or does he give in to his vigilante impulses, avenge his wife's murder, and become the type of killer he's hunted for so many years?

Excerpt

Adam heard a few sounds of Velcro peeling from its straps. Suddenly, Black Mask shed the mystery and ambiguity of his head gear. He became another mystery altogether. What happened to this guy? He looked like he’d seen hell, escaped, and doctored his face to give everyone else on Earth a preview. Black Mask obviously suffered from rosacea because his skin was inflamed, swollen, and the angriest shade of red Adam had ever seen. A jagged circular scar similar to a clock face ran from Black Mask’s forehead down his cheeks to his chin. A vertical scar ran straight down the middle of his forehead and along the bridge of his nose. Two horizontal scars extended from the side of his nose and curved upward toward the temples. Two additional scars extended outward at angles from just under his nose, across his lips and ended on either side of his chin. All of the scars connected to the outer circular one like spokes to resemble a starfish shape. Adam struggled not to have any reaction, but failed to keep the corner of his mouth from inching up into a grimace.

Black Mask smirked and put his right hand up to his face. He pretended to be admiring himself in the mirror. “It’s okay, Detective. Your reaction is fairly common and a lot more subdued than most. Of course, I bet you’ve seen a lot of horrors in your line of work.

“So, you want to know the tale of Heath Grim, do you?”

 About the Author:

INTRO
Joseph Spencer is the author of the Sons of Darkness series launched by his debut novel, Grim, on September 1, 2012. Work on his second book of the series, Wrage, is already underway and is expected to be released some time in 2013.

THE ROAD HERE
The Sons of Darkness is a series of paranormal crime thrillers following investigations into mysterious deaths in the central Illinois city of Prairieville. Home of the notorious serial killer, The Reaper, Prairieville has had a history of violence centered on an ongoing feud between the Marino and Black organized crime families. When bodies start showing up again at the abandoned Marino State Hospital, many fear the Reaper has returned. The people of Prairieville are about to find out their problems stem from a supernatural source which has lurked in secret for decades.

THE STORYTELLER’S STORY
As a boy, Joseph Spencer immersed himself in the deductive logic of Sherlock Holmes, the heroic crime fighting of Batman and Spider-Man, and a taste for the tragic with dramas from poets like Shakespeare and Homer. Before Joseph took to spinning his own tales, he pursued a career in print sports journalism, graduating with honors from Clinton (IL) High School in 1996 and summa cum laude from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 2000. He covered such events as NASCAR’s Subway 500 race in Martinsville, the NBA Draft Camp in Chicago, the Junior College World Series, and Minor League Baseball’s Midwest League All-Star Game during a ten-year career throughout the Midwest. Now, he works as an emergency telecommunications specialist with an Illinois police department. The combination of years of writing experience with a background working with law enforcement professionals gave rise to his writing aspirations.

Joseph was married Dr. Amy (Waggoner) Spencer, an accomplished veterinary doctor, on March 14, 2012. He received word his debut novel was accepted by his publisher, Damnation Books, the next day. Joseph and Amy look forward to their honeymoon in Paris in September 2012. Murphy, a 15-year-old orange tabby, is perhaps the most vocal member of the family. The Spencer family enjoys reading Charlaine Harris, George R.R. Martin, Mary Janice Davidson, and most paranormal stories. The Spencers also enjoy quoting movie lines from The Princess Bride, Rain Man, Bridesmaids, and Office Space.

Guest Post and Giveaway with Diane Thorne

What's in a name?

The cast:
Celee: The Stripper Paran: A voodoo man whose soul can jump into other bodies
Greger: The vampire warrior trying to save his soul
Jay: A wannabe rock star who's a regular human
Murdock: A demon who acquires souls
Jon Hadley: A priest
Sariel: An angel

Most of the time, I get ideas for stories while I'm in the shower, driving, seeing a commercial, talking to a friend, or doing menial little things such as putting cream cheese on a bagel. Seriously, that last bit has happened and I'm working on the story.

Anyway, when I came up with my Sexy & Damned series I was about to doze off to sleep. It's strange for me to get ideas when I go to bed. I'm usually too tired for my brain to function. But it happened. I saw who my main characters were and I knew the name of one right away. Murdock.

Who is Murdock? He's a demon. He offered my protagonist a deal. He proposed a way for her to fight vampires, a chance to live forever and gain their abilities to beat them. The price? Her soul and she brings people to him when he asks. That's right, all she has to do is fetch people, deliver them to Murdock, then walk away. What happens between the person and Murdock is not her concern. She take's his deal and becomes sexy and damned.

Murdock's name was the only one I knew from the start. I had an idea of other names I wanted. Early on, I knew I wanted Greger for my vampire warrior. Why? Because the name sounded good to me. Seriously. That's my logic. The name just came to me and I thought it sounded good. So, Greger is a tough guy who seeks to build a case to save his soul. He needs help on a job and finds my protagonist, so he follows her. He proposes a deal with her, and she can hardly refuse. He has something important she needs to survive. (hint, hint)

Coming up with a name for my protagonist, the Stripper, took a little research. I wanted something different, something uncommon. I'm not sure how I came up with Celee, but I recall looking for Cajun names. She's originally from the South, and she's had an extremely difficult life. Her parents died during her teen years. The State forced her and her siblings into separate foster homes. She ran away and planned to work to get custody of her brother and sister. Well, she soon found the only way to survive was by stripping, and supernatural creatures paid better than humans did. Sadly, those high paying customers such as vampires used and abused her. She'd spent enough time in the hospital drained to the point of death that her heart turned cold. She wanted to fight back. That's when she met Murdock.

Moving on…

One of the easier names I chose was Paran. He's the Godfather of clubs in the Midwest, and he's her boss. He's a twisted character to watch out for. He's survived over the centuries by switching bodies and he has close connections with Murdock. Don't trust him. How did I come up with his name? Well, it's actually commonly used for Godfather in the South. Personal family history and brief research led me to use the name.

What about Jay? I have a human singer who longs for fame. Celee met him a few years back and had to deliver him to Murdock. The demon offered Jay what he wants, and the wannabe rock star accepted. Damn demon didn't say WHEN he would deliver to Jay, so the wannabe rock star works and works, trying to achieve his goal. How did I come up with his name? Well, there is a band I liked in the 1980's and saw on tour when I was sixteen. They were called Gene Loves Jezebel and the twin brothers were Michael and Jay. I chose Jay for my character's name.

As I was writing, I developed other characters. Sariel is a handsome angel who is like a lawyer. I researched on the internet to find a good angel name. Came up with Sariel.

For my priest, I threw his name together. I needed something simple. John is as simple as they come.

My technique for coming up with names isn't the same with every story. Sometimes I just know what the name should be for a character. Other times, I research on the Internet. On occasion, I look at a list of names I have saved and just select one. Rarely do I just say x and x is going to be the name, but it can happen as it did for the priest. For the most part, finding a name is fun. And that's how I do it.

Thank you for reading my post. (A special thank you for having me as a guest.)

EXCERPT

He pushed open the door to the women's facilities and pulled her inside.

"Jay, we need to talk."

He opened the door to the handicap stall and jerked Celee into it.

"We will…later."

She stood next to the wall, bewildered, while he turned the lock. "Please tell me you didn't drag me here to fuck me. What am I now, your bathroom call girl?"

He met her gaze and took hold of her wrists. "You're not my call girl. I never thought you were. But I am going to fuck you because you’re the one I want."

He raised her wrists and backed her against the wall. Her ass bumped a railing while the front of their bodies collided. Pinning her arms above her, he covered her mouth with his and thrust his tongue deep inside.

Her body lit up like a flame as their tongues mingled in a feverish kiss. She could've resisted, could've used her vampire strength to move her arms and push him back, but she enjoyed his fiery passion and how he strived to please her. He wedged between her legs and rubbed his groin against her. From the hardness of his cock to the greedy kiss, she gave up her goal. Talking could wait. Feeling him deep inside her couldn't.

He raised her arms higher above her head, then held one over the other. Clearly, he wanted to control her, hold her in place while he had his way. She'd let him because she knew it excited him, made him want to touch, nip, and lick every bit of her. He placed his free hand on the side of her face, his thumb close to her lips.

"I want you, Celee. I'm so fucking hard right now." He kept his mouth so close she could feel his breath.

"Show me, Jay." She kissed him. "Show me you want me."

Excerpt(Steamy)

A click from within her apartment drew her attention to the hallway. The door squealed lightly as someone opened and closed it. Then footsteps patted onto her hard floor. They stopped. No surprise, her visitor didn't have a heartbeat.

Naked and smiling, she strolled from the bathroom and down the hall. Greger's gaze met hers the minute she turned the corner. He held his coat and tossed it on the recliner as she passed him and proceeded to the kitchen without pausing. When she reached the refrigerator, she came to a halt and opened the door.

"Did you talk to the pastor?" she asked as she claimed a bottle of water from her fridge.

She heard his footsteps moving closer. The sound of zipper prompted her to raise a brow. Gazing out the small window above the sink, she lifted the bottle and dragged it across her forehead. The cold plastic did little to cool her heated temperature, but it sure felt good on her skin.

The jerk of her head back took her by surprise. She dropped the bottle and it thudded when it landed in the sink. Sharp fangs grazed over her neck. In a mere second, her nipples hardened and her heart fluttered.

"Do you think you are the only one starving?" He reached around to her front and slid his digits into her pussy. "I have needs too."

He pinned her against the counter with his cock touching her back. The desire burning within her raged like a wild fire as he fucked her with his fingers.

"Spread your legs."

The words were soft in her ears but very deep and demanding. She obeyed his command, and he brushed his knees against her inner thighs. Teasing her more, he withdrew his fingers from her slick cunt and rubbed them over her clit. Her body quivered inside, wanting more.

"Fuck me, Greger."

His hand disappeared, then she felt the tip of his cock touch her pussy. "I intend to."

Excerpt #1:

Tracing the outline of her jaw, he watched the face of this angel and hated having to wake her. But if she didn't take his blood, he'd lose her for certain and for the first time since he'd turned her, he knew he couldn't bear to think of his world without her.

"Ilona," he whispered near her cheek. "Wake. I'm here."

Slowly her eyelids fluttered open and eyes vacant and lost stared back at him. "Terek?"

Her gaze cut like a knife to his heart. She was nearly gone already, her soul slipping into that void between the vampire and human worlds.

"Look into my eyes, Ilona. Look! I need you to stay with me."

Her eyelids drooped as she began to lose consciousness. Terror raced through his body. There was no more time to wait. Fear of losing her controlled his every move, and his fangs exploded into his mouth. In seconds, he'd pierced his wrist and the blood began to seep from his vein.

Pressing it to her pale lips, he waited in desperation for her to take his blood into her mouth. The blood pooled on her lips, but she made no effort to take it.

"Ilona! Listen to your sire. Drink. Now!" he commanded.

Her eyes opened and turning her head, she whispered, "No. Let me go."

More roughly than he should have, he grabbed her face in his hand and forced her to look at him. "No, I will not lose you! Drink!"

Her voice began to fade and faintly she answered, "Please. I can't live like this."

Terek bent over her and placed a kiss on her lips. The fear that he'd lost her already pressed on his heart and even though he didn't understand why, he was sure when she left him she'd take a piece of his soul with her.

He whispered against her lips one last plea. "Do not take her from me. God, leave her with one who can care for her. I beg of you. Do not take her."

"Why do you want me to live when I don't?" she whispered hoarsely.

"Because there is something special in you as there is in all creatures."

A tiny sigh escaped from between her lips. "You made me this and left me."

Cradling her face in his hands, he said, "I'm sorry. Don't do this. Don't leave me."

"I can't be one of these women. I don't understand this."

Terek kissed her tenderly. "Then don't be. Stay anyway."

Anguish filled her voice. "I woke and I was so hungry. But I don't want food. I hungered for you, but you were gone."

"Take from me everything you hunger for. Take from the one who knows what you need."

Pressing his wrist to her mouth, he fed her soul with his blood. Timid, she stared up at him in fear, but soon her hands held his arm to her lips and she eagerly took what he offered.

Her need for him—for his blood—touched his heart, and a closeness unlike anything he'd experienced in ages came over him. Something about Ilona made him feel like he hadn't felt in almost seven hundred years.

He wanted to save her, to show her the wonders the world offered. If she would allow him, he'd give her that world.

Ilona opened her eyes, and Terek saw that his blood had begun to bring her back from the empty abyss he'd feared and she'd begged for. A tiny smile formed on her lips, making him happy.

Guest Post and Giveaway with Diane Thorne, Demons in Erotic Romance

Please give a warm welcome to Diane Thorne, Author of Demons in Disguise.

 Demons in erotic romance

Upon initial thinking, the two wouldn't seem like a good combination. Typically, demons are evil. They inflict pain and suffering. They are selfish and don't care about people. Only their needs matter.

Well, the last line is true and it works well in erotic romance. My demons are not evil, and neither is my version of Hell. Yes, there is non-stop labor and one becomes a slave to demons, but there's not fire and pain like you'd imagine. This is erotic romance, so my demons are playful and naughty. Yes, they have a job to do, such as collect innocents to bring to Hell so businesses can survive. But they enjoy their jobs, and they especially enjoy sex. Make a deal with one of my playful demons and you'll be in for big ride.

Dominick and Anthony are two sex hungry demons you will meet in Demons in Disguise. Heather is a typical office worker who lusts for two coworkers. Tempted by her friend, she says she'd sell her soul to be with the two men. Those sweet words are music to Anthony's ears. He grabs Dom and teleports to claim Heather before another demon can. Later, disguised as the two coworkers, Anthony and Dom show up at Heather's home and fulfill her every fantasy. (Now see, you can have demons in erotic romance.) When she later learns she had sex with the demons instead of her two coworkers, she's distraught and feels humiliated. But since this is romance, there is a somewhat happy ending. Not a HEA, but HFN. That's good enough, right?

To find out more about my wicked demons, check out Demons in Disguise.

 Blurb:

Heather is attracted to her two coworkers, Chris and Nick. Their toned bodies, charm, and flirtations deepen her desire for them. Overwhelmed with lust, she jokingly states she’d sell her soul to be with them. When they ask her out on a date, she wonders if they have more than a friendly interest in her.

Anthony and Dominick are two sex-hungry demons who enjoy bringing innocents to Hell. They particularly love to collect and play with women. They respond to Heather's call, and disguised as her two coworkers, they fulfill her wildest fantasies.

Chris and Nick admit they want to explore a relationship with her. Heather considers it until they deny having sex with her the night before. Anthony and Dom show up later and reveal the truth. In a strange turn of events, she will have to decide if she wants an eternity filled with playful sex in Hell, or a chance with two men who care for her.

Excerpt:

Anthony had heard the call first. He and Dom had been drinking at The Morning After bar in Hell when Heather had said those sweet words every demon loves to hear. He slammed his glass on the counter, grabbed Dom, and teleported both of them to Heather’s desk. They stood behind her, invisible to all, watching and listening to her talk to her friend and the two men she wanted to take to her bed. Other demons had popped in, but as soon as they saw Dom and Anthony, they vanished. With the decreased amount of new demons arriving, word had to be spreading that Anthony had claimed this innocent.

“This is an easy one. She just wants sex with two men,” Dominick said.

“Can you fucking believe it? She gave up her soul for a ménage a trois. What is it with women today?”

“Perhaps the better question is what’s wrong with the men?”

Anthony chuckled at his longtime friend. “True. The men are nothing like us. They don’t tie their women up, spank them, play with their pussies, or fuck them in every position possible. They don’t make them scream.”

“Because they’re not real men. From what I’ve seen, men today hump their women once and then fall asleep. I’m not surprised we’re getting such easy jobs. These females are horny as the devil himself.”

“It’s sad, Dom. Such beautiful women are missing out.”

“It is. But just think, we can give women what they want and then bring them to Hell where they’ll have to serve us. More workers. More slaves. More freebies. It’s a win-win situation.” A grin spread across Anthony’s face at the thought of so many women in Hell. Yes, they would greatly perk up the place. For the last couple of years, the atmosphere down south had been dull. Few humans had sold their souls, which forced many establishments to shut down or reduce operating hours. Over the centuries, it was common to go through a dry spell for a while. Then business would pick up. In the last few months, the tide had shifted some and more souls populated Hell. Soon, businesses could flourish.

“How close are you to retirement?” Dom asked.

Anthony shook his head, and his sandy-blond strands fell forward over his shoulders. “I don’t know. I don’t track my points.”

Each soul delivered meant a demon earned points, which counted toward retirement. Anthony cared little about the point system. And unlike Dom, he lacked motivation to be a slave driver. Sure, Anthony took pride in his job and delivered plenty of souls to Hell. But he simply wanted to enjoy women—taste them, bite them, fuck them senseless, and hear them scream. If he had a flaw, it was his craving for women. Sometimes he’d pass on jobs if a man had called. And if a freebie occupied Anthony’s time during an innocent’s call, he had no problem waiting for the next one. And there would be another at some point. Until then, he’d enjoy his time with the female beauties in his grasp.

“You planning to work forever?” Dom asked.

“If it means more women to fuck in the flesh, hell yes. Freebies are nice, but there’s nothing like fresh, living pussy.”

Dom slapped his hand on Anthony’s back. “You’re a fine man and demon. Your cock always seems to find the best women. I’m glad you’re my friend.”

“It’s a dirty job which I’m proud to do for eternity.”

“I’m sure you are.” Dom chuckled. “Have you considered how to consummate the deal?”

“Yes, I’ve already devised a plan.” Anthony stiffened. “I will need your help. Let’s have a few drinks and discuss it. I’m confident word has spread one of us has claimed this innocent.”

“Sounds good to me.”

Anthony placed his hand on Dom’s shoulder. Together, they teleported to Damnation Alley in Hell. Demons chatting and laughing walked along the street. Music from one of the clubs attracted a line of demons and damned souls. Another mass crowded in front of the theatre where Little Nicky, The Serpent and the Rainbow, and several hard-core porno movies were playing.

“I’m glad to see they changed the movie selections,” Anthony said as they went around the waiting crowd.

“I ran into Alicia not too long ago, and she wanted to see a comedy. It appears she got her wish.”

“I don’t mind the X-rated movies, personally. They never bore me.”

Anthony slowed as they passed a new sex-toy shop. The clear glass door showed sexy clothes hanging from walls and toys on rack displays. Young men and women with packaged items in their hands waited to check out.

The Italian quickened his pace to catch up with Dom. “I’m glad to see we have new businesses.”

“Better days are coming, without any doubt.”
