The Most Horrible Time of the Year

A Holiday Poem by Michael West

I love Halloween. The whole Halloween season! Ask anyone who’s met me, they’ll tell you the reason. I’m a fan of all things Horror and Gothic. In fact, it’s hard for me to speak on any other topic. And October is an entire month dedicated to nothing but fear. Why, it’s just the most horrible time of the year! So sit back kiddies, and stay for a spell. I’ll tell you how to get ready for this holiday that I know so very well.

You first need a costume. Not a last minute affair. It’s very important to know what you will wear. I’ve had mine picked out for far longer than a week! A really scary one; it will get me the screams that I seek. You can go with the tried and the true. Maybe Jason of Freddy are what will suit you. Or you could come up with a character all your own! Something to make the all kiddies shriek and their parents moan.

Now that your dressed, you have pumpkins to carve. First you cut open the top and remove all the guts from the gourd. This is fun for the whole family, and no one gets bored! Deciding on the perfect face is an important matter. You can take a conservative approach, or be mad as a hatter! Then put a candle inside for that eerie glow. Your house is the scariest, let everyone know!

Next is the candy. So much from to choose! With chocolate, however, no one can lose! I like to give the first ones full sized bars. By the end of the night, I have people pulling up in their cars!

You should turn your front lawn into a cemetery. Put a few gravestones around in the yard. It’s really not very hard. You can use Styrofoam, cardboard, even some wood. Or they have some in stores that are really quite good. Then you add hands coming out of the ground. And it can be cool to add music or sound!

Now you’re ready. Time for Halloween fun! Scare the kids at the door and see how they run! And once the trick ’r treaters all go away, you can sit yourself down and watch some movie maniac slay!

Oh yes, I do so love Halloween! It’s the night of which a Horror fan dreams! The night the air fills with the roar of chainsaws and screams! And when it ends, there is sadness as I put all the decorations away. Too bad it can’t last for more than one day.

Oh but wait! I almost forgot, that I’m a writer of fear! I can keep the scares going all through the year! So now I will sit down and type out a plot. Did I mention that I like Horror more than a lot? So enjoy this whole horrific time! As for me, this is the end of my rhyme.

Happy Halloween!

Blurb:

There are some places in this world that go far beyond any normal definition of “haunted.” These places are so evil, so diabolical, that they become gateways to Hell itself. The Fuller Farm is one such place.

It is said that old man Fuller conducted unspeakable acts, blood rituals and human sacrifices, all in an attempt to gain the ultimate knowledge, the ultimate power. And then, he was killed–horribly murdered on his own lands, leaving the house to stand as a vacant monument to his wickedness. But once a door is opened, it can never really be closed.

Now, the stars are right. The gateway is ready to once more unleash unspeakable horror upon the town of Harmony, Indiana. And this will be one Halloween that they will never forget!

About The Author:

Michael West is the critically-acclaimed author of The Wide Game, Cinema of Shadows, Skull Full of Kisses, and The Legacy of the Gods series. He lives and works in the Indianapolis area with his wife, their two children, their bird, Rodan, their turtle, Gamera, and their dog, King Seesar. Every Halloween, he turns his garage into a haunted house.

Thank you so much for hosting this post, BLH Mistress! :)

Spook House is PERFECT for Halloween! Cinema of Shadows as well, which is also a Harmony, Indiana novel.
