Topic Thursday- Sneak A Peek or Skimming?

BannerFans.com

The topic for this week came about because when I started the book I am reading now then skipped to the ending, I thought to myself, I wonder if I am the only one that does this.

Am I the only one? I mean I try not too but it like tugs at me, pleads with me like a tempting piece of chocolate and I cave. Does this stop me ever from reading all the way through? No and I honestly can't say why I do it either, maybe curiosity? I want to know if you have ever done it and if you have does it stop you from continuing with the book?

How about skimming through a book? I don't do this as much as I peek at the ending but I have been known to. Why you ask, well most of the time its because I hit either a slow spot or I just want to get to the juicy parts. Has skimming effected your connection with the characters or the book? At least not for me it hasn't. What about you?

Will I stop sneaking a peek? Probably not my curiosity always gets the better of me? So tell me do you?

I'm guilty for skimming over excessive description. If the story is at a really good part and the chemistry is boiling between the couple, I'll skim the boring stuff to get to the dialogue. Problem is sometimes I miss important stuff so I have to go back and read. If I'm in a naughty mood, I'll skip to the "good" stuff *wink wink* No skimming there!

oh yea I would never skim the 'good stuff' :)

Hm, I only skim boring boring books. Sometimes I dislike a book, but I still wanna know what happens to I skim the rest to know.

Oh and I have actually skimmed a sex scene too, horrible, what's wrong with me? ;)

I read the ends of books all the time. My husband tells me its cheating. Like you said, it is too tempting. I only do it with paper books, much harder to do with ebooks.

@blodeuedd LOL nothing sometimes they can drag on.

@Truly Bookish I don't see it cheating to me its just giving me an idea what I have in store and in no way does it deter me from reading the book in fact makes me want to read it more.

If I skim it is only because I'm bored and want to know if it is worth continuing. I've never just skipped to the end of a book unless I know it is a DNF and I decided to end it. Good topic!

I will skim if the book is slow and it's in the middle. At the beginning of a book, I try and stick with it in case I miss something. But by the middle if it's slow, I figure its just slow so I'll skim.

As far as reading the ending...no. I really try not to. It's not that knowing the ending would stop me from reading, but I try to let the author take me where they want me at their own time. I try. I will though, from time to time, cheat and read the end. Not often.

I try not too I really do but its a temptation I am trying to break :).

My friend used to always read the end before she even started the book. l used to think "what's the point?" (for every book!)
Being honest, l wouldn't myself but for a book which is boring me l do =p

I don't actually read the whole ending like maybe the last chapter I don't do that just take a peek of last couple pages or so.

I have to admit that I am sometimes guilty of both. Sad but true. I have been known to read the end before the beginning, I can't take the suspense sometimes! I don't do it all the time, but every now and again I will.

Skimming is a whole other topic. I will skim, but only if I am really bored. I want to know if the story is going to be worth finishing so I skim to see if the plot picks up. If not, I won't finish the book, if it does pick up, I will probably go back and reread what I skimmed.

So no worries, you are not alone in this. I think many of us are guilty of one or the other from time to time. :)

LOL good was beginning to think I was the odd man or woman doing this, I don't do it all the time either just every so often if I get anxious of how its gonna go.

I skim occasionally, do not read the ending and am happy to say it has been 20+ years since actually had a DNF book come through my hands...
(Yes the "good stuff" do not skim and may even re-read 4 or 5 times to make sure it said what I thought it did the first time! *bg*)

I belong to the Write Minded Writers group on Yahoo and you would be amazed at how many of the members are end readers, never ceases to amaze me why they would want to ruin the book that way!

I have to say I haven't a DNF yet either I have stopped books but I plan on going back to them because I believe the reasons for me stopping were I slipped in a reading funk. So I can't give those books a DNF until I am sure it wasn't me.

I am a spoilers whore!!! so i tend to always sneak a peak at the end of the book! LOL Sometimes it doesnt work out so great for me... and sometimes it makes me not read a book and wait for the next in the series....

I tend to need to have the couples I root for have at least a temporary HEA in each book LOL if not, I wait for the next one hahahah

BLHmistress said...

LOL see I don't feel so bad if you do it :), just can't do it with ebooks not yet cause I am reading off my pc and not an ereader.

I've skipped to the end of a few books, but the only one that stands out for me is New Moon-I needed to know Edward was actually coming back before I could continue on :)

BLHmistress said...

LOL glad to know I wasn't the only one to do that with New Moon :)

Another spoiler whore here! You already know I'm an end reader! I can't help it! It's a sickness and I'm ok with that!

I have never sneaked a peek at the ending because I wouldn't be able to finish it.

I don't skim either because I like to really get into the story
